A Plan, a Home, and the Freedom to Love People for a Living

For her entire life, Tiffany McMaster has been the kind of person who shows up for everyone else.

As a mother of two and a longtime restaurant server, she built her life around responsibility. She worked hard. She loved hard. She kept moving. Yet, the days were long and the future felt uncertain.

But in 2023, when Tiffany connected with Habitat’s Financial Opportunity Center (FOC), something changed. For the first time, she was surrounded by people showing up for her. At the time, Tiffany was receiving public assistance and working to create a more stable future for her sons. She had already started saving, but she needed help turning her hopes into a plan.

Working with the FOC team, Tiffany laid out her income, expenses, credit, goals, and the steps it would take to move forward.

“I had already started saving and was on my journey,” Tiffany said, “but the FOC helped me

lay everything out, establish priorities and build a plan to work toward my goals.”

Tiffany wanted to own her own home and start her own business as an independent provider caring for people with special needs.

With support from the FOC, Tiffany built the foundation she needed. She got off assistance and increased her credit score by more than 100 points. She was no longer just trying to make it month to month. She was gaining control, confidence, and momentum.

During the months leading up to moving into her Habitat home, Tiffany was still serving in a restaurant, helping build her house - showing up to every shift, building clientele for her future business, pursuing licensure, and raising her sons. She was carrying the weight of today while working toward something better for tomorrow.

After years of being the person others depended on, Tiffany found herself surrounded by Habitat volunteers, donors, staff, and supporters giving their time and resources to help her family build a home.

“To see so many people do that for me was amazing,” she said.

In October 2024, Tiffany moved into her Habitat home. By the end of that year, she quit serving. And when 2025 began, she stepped fully into the life she had been working toward: running her own business as an independent provider.

That year, she doubled her income.

Today, Tiffany manages her business with the same discipline she developed through the FOC. She makes her schedule one month in advance, projects her income, and budgets accordingly.

Financial independence can still feel scary, but now she has the tools and confidence to navigate it.

For the first time in 25 years, Tiffany only works weekends when she chooses. She is on track to earn even more this year, expanding the work she loves.

“I am literally doing what I love and what I prayed for years to be able to do,” Tiffany said.

That is the deeper impact of Habitat’s FOC. It is not only about budgets, credit scores, or income growth. It is about helping someone take the strength they already have and giving it structure. It is about turning survival into stability, and stability into opportunity.

Tiffany did the work. She showed up. She stayed committed. But she did not have to do it alone.

Because of Habitat supporters, Tiffany is now rooted in a safe home, running her own business, providing for her sons, and caring for people in a way that gives purpose to every day.

“I get paid to love people,” Tiffany said. “That’s the biggest gift.”

Some donors want to make sure they can support Habitat well into the future. Planned Giving is a lasting expression of who you are and what mattered to you in your lifetime. The most common way to create a legacy is through a bequest gift in your will. You can also consider making a planned gift through an insurance policy, stock transfer or gift annuity.
